Plastic Recovery Pilot Project

Management of Plastic Waste in Rural Communities

The Plastic Recovery Pilot Project is an innovative project testing a new approach to plastic recovery. It uses an incentive system to link community-driven plastic waste management with plastic recovery through chemical recycling. The project is being implemented in four remote rural villages in Cambodia that do not have access to a public waste management system. The pilot is the first of its kind in Cambodia and has the potential to provide a scalable model for reducing plastic pollution in rural communities. It can be replicated around the world. To date, we have successfully collected the following amounts of plastic (measured in kilograms)

0 HD Polyethylene
0 LD Polyethylene
0 Polystyrene
0 Polypropylene

Single-Use Plastic accounts for over Half of all Plastic Pollution

Four categories of single-use plastics are shown below. Oil (around 85%), carbon black (around 10%) and gas (around 5%) can be recovered from plastics through chemical recycling. The map also shows where the plastic pollution in our oceans comes from. Please note that the images are from UNEP and are subject to copyright.
